Battery storage paired with 37% of new U.S. residential solar systems in 2025

October 1, 2026 · PV Magazine USA · Score: 55

Home battery storage is becoming a standard part of rooftop solar, not an extra. In 2025, 37% of new residential solar systems in the U.S. included a battery, up from 25% the year before, according to data from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory covering about 450,000 systems installed that year.

California remains the biggest driver, with 74% of new residential solar installs there now including storage, up from 58% in 2024. That shift followed the state's move to a new rule for crediting exported solar power, called NEM 3.0, in April 2023, which pays less for electricity sent back to the grid during many hours. That makes storing your own excess solar power for later use more valuable than selling it back. But the trend isn't just a California story anymore: in the rest of the country, the share of new solar systems paired with batteries jumped from 7% to 17% in a single year, with especially sharp growth in Arizona and Texas. Installers point to similar changes in net-metering rules and time-of-use electricity rates in other states as a likely reason.

The size of a typical home battery hasn't changed much, holding at 13.5 kWh of storage capacity. But newer batteries, including Tesla's Powerwall 3, can deliver power much faster, with median output nearly doubling to 11.4 kW. If you're considering solar, it's worth checking how your state's export rates and time-of-use pricing affect whether adding a battery makes financial sense for your home.
