Australia’s 7 best-selling EVs are now all Chinese — even Tesla’s

July 10, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 8

This one's about the car market, not home energy upgrades, but it's a notable shift for anyone tracking EVs. Australia just had its biggest month ever for electric car sales, and for the first time seven different EV models each sold over 1,000 units in a single month. Every one of them is either a Chinese brand or built in China — including the top seller, Tesla's Model Y, which is made in Shanghai for right-hand-drive markets like Australia.

Six of the seven are Chinese brands: BYD (two models), Geely, Omoda Jaecoo, Zeekr, and MG (owned by China's SAIC since 2007). Price is a big driver — three of the seven cost under AU$40,000, and none of these models were even sold in Australia a year ago. Japanese automakers, once dominant in the Australian car market generally, barely register on the EV side, with only three models cracking the top 50.

Overall, EVs made up 23.5% of all new car sales in Australia in June, and even higher in some regions. None of this changes what's available to US buyers directly, but it signals how fast Chinese manufacturers are scaling EV production and undercutting on price globally — a trend that can eventually affect the cost and availability of EV models, batteries, and possibly home charging equipment in other markets, including the US.
