Xpanner sets up excavator-based solar panel installation
A company called Xpanner has released a new tool that turns a standard excavator into an automated solar panel installer. The system, called the X1 Panel Lift, picks up solar panels, positions them, and helps install them, all controlled by one operator through a simple interface. It builds on an earlier version of the same technology that automated pile driving, the process of setting the posts that support solar panels, for large solar projects.
This news applies to big utility-scale solar farms, not home rooftop installations. The equipment is aimed at contractors building large-scale solar arrays who want to speed up repetitive work and rely on smaller crews. It is offered through a subscription that includes the equipment, software, and support, rather than requiring companies to buy new machinery outright.
For a homeowner, this doesn't change anything about installing panels on your own house. Home solar installs are done by hand on a much smaller scale and don't involve heavy machinery like excavators. The practical effect of technology like this, if it lowers labor costs and speeds up construction on large solar farms, could eventually show up in cheaper electricity from utility-scale solar or faster buildout of local solar projects. But it has no bearing on rooftop solar costs, rebates, or installation timelines for individual houses.
