Why does Monarc build its e-bikes with their forks on backward?

This is not really about home energy upgrades, but here's what it covers: an e-bike maker called Monarc is using an unusual fork design on its off-road model, the Monarc Marker. Most bike suspension forks have a brace in front of the front wheel, but Monarc's in-house "Gneiss" fork puts that brace behind the wheel instead, which can make the fork look like it's installed backward.

The design isn't new — it was originally patented by Manitou for high-end mountain bikes years ago. Once that patent expired, other companies became free to use the idea, and Monarc is now bringing a refined version of it to e-bikes. According to Monarc, moving the brace to the rear makes the fork lighter while also making it stiffer and stronger. That added stiffness can help the front wheel track more accurately over rough ground and reduce flex when braking hard or hitting bumps, while the bike still offers 80 mm of suspension travel. Moving the brace back also leaves less room for mud and sticks to get jammed between the tire and the fork.
