Why data center companies Equinix and Oracle are buying fuel cells

Big cloud and data center companies are turning to fuel cells for power, and this is worth knowing even if it has nothing to do with your roof or furnace. A fuel cell generates electricity through a chemical reaction, using natural gas or hydrogen, instead of burning fuel like a generator does. Oracle has contracted for up to 2.8 gigawatts of fuel cell capacity, with some units running within 55 days of installation. Equinix, which runs data centers worldwide, already has 73 megawatts of fuel cell capacity from maker Bloom Energy, with 35 more megawatts contracted across 19 sites in six states. One Silicon Valley data center plans to run mainly on fuel cells, using the regular power grid only as backup.

The appeal is speed and efficiency: fuel cells can be installed in under a year, versus the years-long timelines for new power plants or grid upgrades, and they run quieter with fewer losses than sending electricity over long distances. Goldman Sachs estimates fuel cells could supply up to 15 percent of new power demand from data centers, adding at least 8 gigawatts of capacity by 2030. Equinix says its use of Bloom's technology has cut an estimated 285,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent and saved 382 billion gallons of water.

For homeowners, this isn't a program you can access directly. It signals that the same fuel cell technology increasingly powering AI infrastructure is scaling up fast, with other companies like FuelCell Energy, PowerCell Group, and Ballard Power Systems also expanding into this market.
