What I saw inside Lectron’s EV charger factory in China
Lectron, the company behind many of the EV charging adapters drivers use to connect different plug types, has released a second-generation home charger called the NEXUS. Lectron is best known for making J1772/CCS-to-NACS adapters (the pieces that let EVs with one plug type charge on stations built for another), and it now also supplies charging parts to automakers like Ford, GM, and Mercedes-Benz.
The NEXUS is a Level 2 charger, the type most homeowners install in a garage or driveway for faster overnight charging than a regular outlet provides. It's available now without wifi, with a connected version coming in a few months. You can choose a plug-in version (NEMA 14-50 outlet) or have it hardwired by an electrician. Both versions carry several UL safety certifications, and the plug-in model adds a temperature sensor on each hot pin as an extra safety check. The charger also has an IP66 rating, meaning it's built to resist water and dust, which matters if you mount it outdoors.
During a factory tour, the company showed off its testing process: chargers get soaked with pressurized water, heated in an aging chamber, dropped, and driven over before they're approved. Each unit gets a unique serial number and a digital build record, so any problem can be traced back to its exact assembly steps. For a homeowner, the practical takeaway is that this charger is designed to handle years of outdoor exposure and steady heavy use, since a home charger typically pushes 40 to 48 amps for hours at a stretch.
