Volvo Upgrades the XC60 & XC90 Plug-in Hybrids with Significantly More Fully Electric Range

September 15, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 0

Volvo is rolling out a mid-cycle refresh of its XC60 and XC90 SUVs for the 2028 model year, and the biggest change is a big jump in electric-only range for the plug-in hybrid versions. A plug-in hybrid runs on a battery for shorter trips and switches to its gas engine for longer ones. The updated XC60 plug-in hybrid gets up to 124 miles of electric range per charge, up sharply from before, thanks to a larger battery (41.2 kWh) now mounted under the floor instead of in the center tunnel. The XC90 plug-in hybrid gets the same battery and reaches about 102 miles of electric range. For most daily driving, that's enough to go a full work week without needing to plug in every night, though charging at home would still top it off.

Beyond range, both SUVs get exterior design updates, new interior tech including Google Gemini voice assistance, and upgraded safety features such as automatic emergency braking and steering, collision avoidance, and alerts to prevent opening a car door into a passing cyclist. The XC90 also drops a lidar sensor from its earlier design.

For homeowners who charge an EV or plug-in hybrid at home, this doesn't change anything about your home setup, but it's a sign that longer-range plug-in hybrids are becoming more practical as a bridge for people not ready to go fully electric. The XC60 for the US market will be built at Volvo's Charleston, South Carolina plant.
