Volkswagen is recalling ‘several thousand’ EVs, including the ID.4, and not just in the US
Volkswagen is recalling several thousand electric vehicles worldwide over a battery problem, with models affected including the ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, ID. Buzz, and the Cupra Born, built between 2023 and 2026. This is on top of a recall Volkswagen already filed with US safety regulators earlier this month covering 22,524 ID.4 SUVs from model years 2023 to 2026. An internal quality check found that some high-voltage battery cells don't meet standards, and charging these batteries above 80% in certain vehicles could lead to "thermal propagation," which is a fire risk inside the battery pack.
Volkswagen doesn't yet have a fix, so in the meantime it's telling owners of affected vehicles to limit charging to 80% of battery capacity until a remedy is ready. In the US, the company says it has logged 22 related claims between January 2024 and August 2026. Notification letters to owners are expected to go out November 27, 2026, with a follow-up letter once an actual repair is available.
If you own one of these Volkswagen or Cupra EVs from the affected model years, keep an eye out for that recall letter and consider charging to 80% in the meantime as a precaution. Owners with questions can call Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and reference recall number 93EX. The company is still working with its battery supplier, SK Battery America, to pin down the cause and an eventual fix.
