Virginia hearing examiner tells Dominion to release memo on FPL investigation
A Virginia regulator has ordered Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy to turn over documents they tried to keep private, including a memo on an investigation into Florida Power & Light's alleged illegal political activity. The ruling came as part of the review of the two companies' proposed $67 billion merger, which would combine Dominion with NextEra and could create the largest electric utility in the country. A consumer advocacy group, Clean Virginia, had pushed for the memo's release, arguing that how NextEra's leadership handled the Florida allegations says something about how it would govern Dominion if the merger goes through.
If you're a Dominion customer in Virginia, North Carolina, or South Carolina, this merger review is worth watching, since the companies have offered bill credits as part of the deal — most recently a package spread over four years that excludes data centers, along with promises to build more clean energy and battery storage faster. The State Corporation Commission has scheduled public hearings around Virginia for residents to weigh in, and an evidentiary hearing is set to begin November 17. The commission must decide by January 11, and the companies expect the deal to close in the second half of 2027, pending approval from North Carolina, South Carolina, and federal regulators as well.
