Trump Officially Throws In The Solar Power Towel (Shocker!)

October 7, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 31

A Japan-based solar manufacturer, TOYO, held a ribbon-cutting this week at a new solar module factory in Humble, Texas, just outside Houston. The plant has already created about 100 factory jobs, with plans to add a solar cell operation on site that could bring roughly 400 more, for a total of around 750 jobs according to the Houston Business Journal. A senior Commerce Department official attended the ceremony and credited the administration's policies for the investment, even though the current administration has otherwise pulled back federal support for solar power over the past year.

Separately, the administration issued a trade order on August 6 that sets a price floor on imported polysilicon, the raw material used to make solar cells, with the goal of boosting US-based polysilicon production. The solar industry's trade group has warned this could raise prices for finished solar panels, though the order also includes incentives meant to offset that increase. If panel costs rise, that could eventually affect pricing for home solar installations, though it is too early to know by how much.

Meanwhile, federal energy data show solar continuing to grow regardless of shifting policy. Utility-scale solar generation rose nearly 34 percent in 2025 and is forecast to keep climbing through 2027, while coal's share of the nation's electricity keeps shrinking. For homeowners, the bigger picture is that solar manufacturing and power generation are expanding across the country, which could mean more domestic-made equipment and jobs in the years ahead, even as trade rules around materials like polysilicon remain in flux.
