Toyota is recalling 10,000 electric C-HR SUVs

September 9, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

Toyota is recalling about 10,000 electric C-HR SUVs from the 2026 model year in North America because of a software problem. Under certain conditions, when the battery is fully charged or close to it, the regenerative braking system (the feature that recaptures energy while slowing down and feeds it back into the battery) can overcharge the battery. That can cause the electric drive system to shut down and the vehicle to lose power while you're driving it.

The fix is a software update to the battery's control computer, done at a Toyota dealership. Toyota plans to notify affected owners in early November. Only the 2026 C-HR EV is included in this recall; the newer 2027 C-HR, which is also on sale now, is not affected.

If you own a 2026 electric C-HR, you can check whether your specific vehicle is involved at Toyota.com/recall using your VIN or license plate number, or by calling Toyota's Brand Engagement Center at 1-800-331-4331. The recall had not yet appeared on the federal safety database (nhtsa.gov/recalls) as of this report, so some details, including the exact scope, may still be limited. There are also reports the same software issue could affect the similar C-HR+ electric model sold overseas in Europe and the UK, though that has not been confirmed.
