Top Selling Electric Vehicles in the World — June 2026
Global electric vehicle sales keep climbing. In June, plugin vehicle registrations worldwide rose 8% from a year earlier to about 2 million, with fully electric models (BEVs) up 21% while plugin hybrids (PHEVs, which pair a battery with a gas engine) fell 14%. Battery electrics now make up 30% of all new vehicle sales worldwide when combined with plugin hybrids, and 24% for the year so far, up from 6% five years ago and about 1% a decade ago. Outside China and the United States, where markets are behaving differently, EV sales jumped 52% year over year.
The best-selling models worldwide remain the Tesla Model Y, BYD Song, and Tesla Model 3, a lineup that has held the top three spots for four years running. Chinese brands continue to gain ground: Leapmotor, a newer automaker, moved into third place among manufacturers with a record month, and BYD, Geely, and Tesla remain the top three overall. Among traditional automakers, Toyota, BMW, and Mercedes posted strong results, with BMW's new iX3 and Toyota's BZ4X showing gains.
None of this changes rebates or incentives for home chargers or upgrades, but it's a sign of how fast the EV market is shifting worldwide. If you're weighing an EV purchase alongside home upgrades like a charger or panel work, the broader trend points to more electric models arriving and battery-only vehicles pulling further ahead of plugin hybrids in sales.
