This new framework measures corporate chemical footprints

A group backed by Google and Apple, called the Safer Chemistry Impact Fund, has released a new tool for companies to track the chemicals used in their products and supply chains. The tool, known as the Safer Chemistry Impact Metrics Framework, lets companies catalog chemical hazards, spot gaps in their knowledge, and measure what share of the chemicals they use are flagged as "chemicals of concern" — substances with known, lasting risks to people or the environment — versus safer alternatives. It was built with input from companies, nonprofits, investors, and government agencies, and tested in the beauty, apparel, and consumer electronics industries, though it's meant to apply broadly.

The effort responds to the Global Framework on Chemicals, a set of nonbinding international guidelines adopted in 2023 for managing chemical risks throughout their life cycle. The goal is to eventually turn this new framework into a widely recognized standard, similar to how companies now measure and report greenhouse gas emissions. That standard-setting process is expected to begin in early 2027.

This isn't a rule homeowners need to act on, but it's worth knowing about if you pay attention to how the products and materials in your home are made. Companies like Google, H&M, HP, Levi Strauss, and Sephora already fund related work through a database called the Chemical Hazard Data Trust, which rates common chemicals on dozens of health and environmental measures. As more companies adopt frameworks like this, it could eventually mean clearer information about the chemicals used in everyday household products, from electronics to building materials.
