The world’s tallest wind turbine just reached 1,197 feet

October 2, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 8

A wind turbine in Schipkau, Germany, has reached 1,197 feet, making it the tallest in the world and the second-tallest structure in the country, behind Berlin's TV tower. Built by the company GICON for a German government innovation agency, the turbine's rotor hub sits 984 feet off the ground. The idea is simple: wind blows stronger and steadier at greater heights, so a turbine up there can generate more power than one of the same blade size closer to the ground. GICON says the design could roughly double the electricity output compared with a conventional turbine, though that's a projection, not yet a proven result.

The turbine itself is rated at 3.8 megawatts, with larger 7-plus megawatt versions planned. To build it this tall, crews used a telescoping tower raised into place by a special lifting system, rather than a giant crane. Full commissioning is expected in November, with some work still remaining.

This isn't something that affects your home directly, but the bigger idea behind it might matter down the road. GICON and the agency backing it think taller turbines could be added to existing wind farms as a second layer above current turbines, potentially fitting thousands more into land already in use rather than building new sites. That's still just an estimate of what might be possible. For now, the Schipkau turbine is a pilot project, and its real-world energy output has yet to be tested once it starts running.
