The Hidden Energy Drain Lurking in QSR Kitchens

This news is about restaurant kitchens, not homes, but the underlying problem is one worth knowing about. A private equity firm called Butterfly Equity, through its energy-services company Budderfly, studied airflow in more than 250 fast-food kitchens. They found 91% had unbalanced airflow, and half the "makeup air units" — equipment that brings fresh air in to replace what's pulled out by exhaust fans — weren't working at all. Without enough incoming air, a kitchen ends up with more air being sucked out than let in, which pulls conditioned (heated or cooled) air out of the building and forces equipment to work harder, driving up energy bills.

Budderfly's fix is to install pressure sensors that continuously track airflow, rather than checking it only once when a system is first installed, and to replace old rooftop units with newer all-electric systems sized for how the kitchen actually operates today.

While this story is about commercial kitchens, the core idea applies at home too: HVAC systems are often sized for how a house used to be used, not how it's used now, and imbalances between air going out and air coming in can quietly waste energy. If you've added appliances, done a renovation, or noticed rooms that feel stuffy or hard to keep comfortable, it may be worth having your own home's airflow checked rather than just adjusting the thermostat.
