The company building AI data centers, Compass Datacenters, says a shortage of skilled electricians is becoming one of the biggest holdups in building new data centers, ranking right behind power supply and community pushback. It isn't stopping construction, but it's driving up costs and stretching timelines. Wages for these electricians have roughly tripled over the past decade, and companies are increasingly flying in workers and housing them near job sites, much like the traveling nurse model used in healthcare.
Part of the shortage comes from the specialized skill data centers require. The electrical panels in these buildings are far more complex than what's in a typical house, so companies need both more electricians overall and more senior, highly trained ones. Compass has responded by partnering with a community college in Texas on a 12-week training program and by shifting toward prefabricated, factory-built components — electrical skids, cooling units, even wall panels — that get assembled onsite like modular pieces, cutting down on the number of skilled workers needed at any one location.
For homeowners, this isn't a program you can sign up for or a rebate to chase. It mostly explains why data centers going up near some communities take years to build and why they're becoming a bigger part of local debates over housing, jobs, and grid costs. The company argues it covers its own grid-connection costs so they don't land on other ratepayers' bills, but that arrangement can vary by location.
