The Data Is Out There. How Do We Make It Useful for LEED v5?

October 7, 2026 · US Green Building Council (USGBC) · Score: 32

This news is about a tool for large commercial building projects, not something that applies directly to a single house. It is worth knowing about mainly as background on how green building standards are evolving.

LEED is a widely used rating system for certifying that buildings meet certain sustainability standards. Its newest version, LEED v5, asks large construction and renovation projects to do early assessments of climate risk (things like flooding, extreme heat, wildfire, and storms), community impact, and carbon emissions before design work moves forward. Pulling together the public data needed for these assessments, from sources like FEMA flood maps, NOAA climate data, and Census records, has been a slow, scattered process for project teams.

A company called Green Badger has built a free tool, Site Signal, that automatically gathers this public data for a project address and fills in draft LEED v5 planning worksheets. It does not replace judgment or expertise, but it saves time by organizing the raw numbers and flagging what still needs a closer look.

For a homeowner, this does not change anything about rebates, upgrades, or your own energy bills. It is relevant mostly if you are curious about how commercial and institutional buildings are being pushed to plan for climate risks and carbon footprint earlier in the design process, which is the direction building standards are heading more broadly.
