Home ventilation often gets treated as an afterthought in the HVAC business, and building science writer Allison Bailes argues that's a real problem for homeowners. Bath fans, kitchen exhausts, and whole-house ventilation systems (like energy recovery ventilators, or ERVs, which bring in fresh air while recovering heat from the air they exhaust) are frequently installed poorly. Bailes points to common mistakes: ducts with sharp turns that choke airflow, bath fans moving only half the air they're rated for, and ERV installations that regularly have serious flaws. The result can be moisture problems, mold, stale indoor air, and equipment that runs constantly while doing little.

The core issue, according to Bailes, is that no one in the industry fully owns ventilation. HVAC technicians juggle so many other skills — refrigerant charging, combustion safety, ductwork — that ventilation design and installation often gets whatever attention is left over. There's also no widely recognized credential that tells homeowners who is actually qualified to design, install, and maintain these systems, so many people don't even know to ask about it.

For homeowners, the takeaway is that a ventilation system quietly running in the background isn't necessarily working as intended. If you have a bath fan, ERV, or other mechanical ventilation, it may be worth understanding what it's supposed to do and whether it's actually doing it, since these problems tend to go unnoticed until they show up as moisture, odors, or high energy bills.
