Tesla Semi wins 2,500-truck order, doubling US electric Class 8 fleet

September 22, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 30

This is trucking news, not something that directly touches most home upgrade plans, but it signals where electric vehicle adoption is heading. Tesla has been named the lead truck supplier for the largest electric heavy-duty truck order in US history: 2,500 Class 8 trucks (big rigs) bought through a new buying group called ZET SCALE, formed by the freight nonprofit Catalyst Mobility and the Smart Freight Centre. Microsoft and PepsiCo are among the shippers backing the deal. Kenworth, Volvo, and RIDE are secondary suppliers, so not all 2,500 trucks will be Teslas. The order alone would roughly double the number of electric Class 8 trucks currently on US roads, and the alliance says it eventually wants more than 10,000. The trucks will go to freight hubs in cities including Los Angeles, Seattle, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, and the New York area over the next few years.

Separately, IMC Logistics, a large drayage (short-haul port trucking) operator, is adding 50 Tesla Semis to its California fleet, split between shorter-range and longer-range models, roughly doubling its zero-emission truck count.

None of this changes home energy programs or rebates. But it does show electric trucks moving from pilot projects into large-scale commercial orders, with financing programs now built to reduce the risk for fleet buyers, which is often what slows adoption of new vehicle technology.
