Tesla owners are now filming themselves breaking the law on FSD — and posting it for clout

August 26, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 5

This is a story about how Tesla owners use Full Self-Driving, not a home energy topic, so there is no upgrade or rebate angle here for your house. Briefly, though: social media has filled up with Tesla drivers filming themselves sleeping, gaming, watching TV, or working on a laptop while FSD drives, and bragging about it. Some post tricks for beating the system's driver-monitoring camera, like hanging a folded bill over it, or use apps and add-ons sold specifically to unlock video playback while the car is moving.

Tesla markets the feature as "FSD (Supervised)" and says plainly that it requires an attentive driver and does not make the car autonomous. Doing any of these things behind the wheel counts as distracted or careless driving, which is illegal everywhere in the US. Tesla faces billions of dollars in related lawsuits, a $243 million court judgment over a fatal Autopilot crash, and a federal safety investigation covering 3.2 million vehicles, while its own crash data has hit record monthly highs for Autopilot and FSD incidents.

None of this changes anything about home energy upgrades, solar, or rebates. If you're weighing a heat pump, insulation, or solar for your house, this news doesn't affect those plans one way or another.
