Tesla Full Self-Driving likes trains a bit too much

August 27, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This is a Tesla news item, not a home energy story, but here's the gist: a Tesla running the newest version of Tesla's "Full Self-Driving" software (called FSD, an advanced driver-assist system that is not actually fully autonomous) nearly drove into a moving train this week. Dashcam video shows the car approaching a railroad crossing at 9 mph with flashing lights and train horns sounding, and the system did not brake until the driver took over manually.

This is at least the third documented case this year of Tesla's FSD failing at a railroad crossing, following incidents in West Covina, California, and Texas earlier this year, plus a 2025 case in Pennsylvania where a Tesla was actually struck by a train. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into FSD in October 2025 after 58 reported crashes, and that probe has since grown to cover about 2.9 million vehicles equipped with the software. Two U.S. senators have separately urged the agency to look specifically at the railroad crossing failures.

There's nothing here about home energy upgrades, rebates, or costs for homeowners. It is simply a report on a recurring safety problem with Tesla's driver-assist software and the growing regulatory scrutiny it faces.
