Sunrun ‘distributed data center’ pilot taps its home solar and battery network
Sunrun, the home solar and battery installer, is expanding a pilot that puts small computing devices — about the size of a desktop computer — inside homes that already have its solar panels and batteries. These "distributed data centers" would run AI computing tasks using power from the home's solar and battery system, rather than building large centralized data centers that strain local power grids.
If you already have Sunrun solar and battery equipment, this could eventually apply to you. Sunrun says hosts would receive some form of compensation, though it hasn't said how much. The company hasn't announced pricing, a start date for wider rollout, or how many homes it wants to sign up — right now it's inviting people to join a waitlist. Sunrun has more than 1.1 million existing solar and battery customers it could draw from.
A rival company, SPAN, announced a similar idea earlier this year working with NVIDIA, installing computing equipment in 100 new-build homes. Outside experts are divided on the concept: one computer scientist noted that smaller, distributed computing could ease pressure on local power grids as AI companies process more everyday requests (rather than training new models), but he also questioned whether homes are necessary for that benefit, and raised concerns about security for valuable computer chips sitting in private houses rather than guarded facilities.
For now, this is a pilot program, not a program with set terms. If you have Sunrun equipment and are interested, the company's website has a signup list, but no details yet on what participation would actually involve.
