Solar’s infrastructure obstacle

Solar power itself has gotten cheap and fast to build. What's slowing projects down now is the grid: getting new solar and battery projects connected to transmission lines, substations, and utility equipment. In Texas, demand from data centers, AI, and manufacturing has been so strong that grid operator ERCOT has fielded requests for hundreds of gigawatts of new electricity load. Developers now often check whether a site can actually connect to the grid before they buy land, reversing the old approach.

Connecting a project to the grid (called interconnection) has become its own complicated process, involving utility reviews, financial deposits that can run into the millions of dollars, and long waits for specialized equipment like high-voltage transformers and breakers. In one case, a single approved 345-kilovolt breaker (a piece of switching equipment) became the item holding up a whole project's connection date. A solar farm can be built in under two years, but the transmission and utility work needed to hook it up can take much longer.

None of this is specific to solar — it reflects a broader strain on the electric grid as data centers and industrial electrification drive up demand for power nationwide. For homeowners, the takeaway is indirect: rules and rebates for home upgrades usually don't hinge on these transmission bottlenecks, but the pace of grid buildout in your area can affect how reliable and how expensive electricity is over time. Checking what your own state and utility currently offer for home electrification remains a separate, more direct path to savings.
