SMACNA Releases Updated Kitchen Ventilation Standard
An industry group called SMACNA has published an updated standard for commercial kitchen ventilation systems, covering how exhaust hoods and makeup air systems (the fresh air drawn in to replace what's exhausted) are designed and installed in restaurants and other commercial kitchens. This is a technical reference for designers, contractors, and code officials, not something that applies to home kitchens. It aligns with existing food equipment standards and codes, aiming to support fire safety, air quality, and energy performance in commercial settings.
SMACNA also released a Spanish-language version of its HVAC Duct Design Guide, a reference covering how ductwork and air distribution systems are engineered. The goal is to make this technical guidance easier to use for Spanish-speaking workers in the field.
None of this changes anything for homeowners directly. These are professional standards meant to guide how commercial systems get built and inspected, not residential equipment or rebate programs. If you're planning a home energy upgrade, like a heat pump or duct sealing, this news doesn't affect your options or costs. It's worth knowing about only as a sign that the industry continues refining its technical guidelines, which eventually shapes the training and codes that inform the contractors working on all kinds of HVAC systems, including the ones in homes.
