Silver prices rebound as AI, data centers add to industrial demand

August 25, 2026 · PV Magazine USA · Score: 36

Silver prices have been on a wild ride and are climbing again. After hitting an all-time high above $120 an ounce in late January, prices reversed sharply, falling to around $57 an ounce by late June and $55.5 in mid-July. Since early August they've turned upward again, reaching $68.3 an ounce on August 25. Gold has also risen, from around $4,000 an ounce in late July to more than $4,600 in late August, as investors seek safe havens amid economic and political uncertainty.

Analysts expect the gains to continue. One research firm told the industry it expects gold to reach $5,000 an ounce and silver to hit $80 by the end of the year, partly because they don't expect the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this year. The Silver Institute says the market is tight: the industry is heading toward its sixth straight year of using more silver than is mined, with this year's shortfall expected to reach nearly 50 million ounces. Demand is being driven not just by solar panels, which use silver in their electrical components, but increasingly by artificial intelligence, data centers and electric vehicles, all of which rely on silver for wiring, circuit boards and power equipment.

This matters for homeowners considering solar panels, since silver is a key material in panel manufacturing. Rising and volatile silver prices could affect solar equipment costs going forward, though the industry is also working on ways to use less silver per panel.
