Sierra Club Condemns Trump-Appointed TVA Approval of Massive Illinois Coal Mining Expansion

August 25, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 15

The Tennessee Valley Authority's board voted to sell its federally owned mineral rights to the Sugar Camp mine in Illinois, a decision that clears the way for one of the nation's largest coal mines to keep operating. The Sierra Club says the move could allow up to 30 more years of underground mining at the site using a method called longwall mining, which extracts coal in long strips and can cause the ground above to sink.

The mine's operator, Foresight, has a troubled record. Four of its managers were recently indicted on federal charges tied to concealing an underground fire that put miners at risk, and Illinois' attorney general is suing over illegal discharges of PFAS, chemicals used to fight that fire, into local waterways. Environmental groups had sued in December to try to block the TVA from expanding coal mining in the state, citing the operator's history of safety violations and miner deaths, but the board proceeded with the sale anyway.

This is a policy and industry story rather than something requiring homeowner action. It does not change any rebate program, tax credit, or upgrade option available to you. It does reflect a broader push by the current administration to support coal production, including rolling back some environmental and worker-safety rules, which is worth knowing if you're tracking the direction of national energy policy. If you're in Illinois or near the Tennessee Valley Authority's service area, this is the kind of decision that shapes the region's electricity mix over the long run, even though it has no immediate effect on your home's utility bill or upgrade choices.
