Showing Up Creates Work: SMART Locals Turn Field Organizing Into Opportunities for Members

October 8, 2026 · ACHR News · Score: 28

This is a labor-industry story about sheet metal workers' unions, not a direct homeowner concern, but it offers a glimpse into the workforce behind HVAC and ductwork installation. In Georgia, a union local (SMART Local 85) ran a three-day recruiting push across the Atlanta area, visiting more than 300 construction sites to connect experienced sheet metal workers with union contractors. The effort came after contractors said they'd need hundreds more workers by the end of the year to keep up with demand. Several fabricators from a nonunion duct shop ended up moving to union jobs as a result.

In Syracuse, New York, a single conversation at a hotel construction site led a union representative to introduce the project's managers to union contractors for sheet metal and food-service work. That contact helped a union contractor win the sheet metal contract for a new hotel, work expected to employ about 10 union members for eight months.

For homeowners, this isn't about a specific rebate or product, but it points to a broader trend: demand for skilled HVAC and ductwork labor is high enough that unions are actively recruiting and contractors are competing for workers. That tightness in the labor market can affect scheduling and availability when you're lining up contractors for heating, cooling, or duct work on your own home.
