Rune raises $40 million Series A to build on-site, off-grid AI data centers at solar facilities

September 24, 2026 · PV Magazine USA · Score: 18

A startup called Rune has raised $40 million to build small data centers right on top of solar farms, using power that would otherwise go to waste. Solar plants often produce more electricity than the grid can absorb, and utilities force them to "curtail," or throw away, over 50 terawatt-hours of generation a year nationwide — sometimes up to a fifth of what a plant makes. Rune's system, called RELIC, plugs into that surplus power directly at the solar site, skipping the years-long wait to connect new equipment to the grid.

The company says its equipment can be set up in about an hour and running within six weeks, and it has already placed one installation at a 200 megawatt solar farm in Texas. The funding round was led by Spark Capital, with several other investment firms joining, bringing Rune's total money raised to $53.5 million. The plan is to sign more deals with solar farm owners and expand this approach for companies that need computing power for artificial intelligence.

This is not a home energy upgrade story, but it does touch on something homeowners with solar panels may recognize: the same curtailment problem that lets a big solar farm's excess power sit unused is similar, in principle, to what can happen with home solar systems in areas where the grid limits how much power you're allowed to send back. There's no rebate or program here for homeowners to act on — it's a sign of how solar power that used to go to waste might increasingly get put to use elsewhere.
