Rivian’s Mind Robotics snags Doug Field, ex-Tesla and Ford EV chief
This is corporate and tech news, not directly about home energy upgrades. Rivian, the electric vehicle maker, has brought on Doug Field, an engineer who previously ran Tesla's Model 3 program and later led Ford's electric vehicle division, to serve as president of Mind Robotics. Mind Robotics is a startup spun out of Rivian that builds AI and robot hardware for factory work, and it has raised over $1 billion in funding in less than a year from investors including Eclipse, Accel, Andreessen Horowitz, and Kleiner Perkins.
Field will oversee product, engineering, and operations alongside Rivian's CEO. The company plans to test its robots in Rivian's own vehicle plant in Normal, Illinois, where the R2 model is currently ramping up production. Mind Robotics has not shown a product publicly and hasn't said whether its robots will look humanoid, unlike Tesla's competing Optimus robot program, which has faced repeated delays.
For a homeowner, this story has no direct bearing on energy-efficiency upgrades, utility bills, or home rebate programs. It's worth knowing mainly as a sign of how much money and talent is flowing into robotics and automation tied to electric vehicle manufacturing, which could eventually affect how EVs and other products are built, but it doesn't change anything about home heating, cooling, insulation, or available incentives right now.
