ReFuelEU’s First Year Shows the Mandate Works

September 18, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 9

This one is about aviation fuel policy in Europe, not home energy upgrades, so it has little direct bearing on your house. A new report on the EU's sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) mandate found that airports supplied 1.1 million tonnes of SAF in 2025, or 2.8% of all aviation fuel, beating the required 2% target and up sharply from 0.6% the year before.

The report also flagged problems. Most of that fuel came from used cooking oil and animal fats, feedstocks prone to fraud or already needed by other industries, and 85% of the raw materials were imported, mostly from China, up from 69% the year before. Meanwhile, "e-SAF," a synthetic jet fuel meant to cut emissions further, has around 60 projects in development across Europe but none have reached the stage of a final investment decision, meaning money is not yet committed to build them.

The report's authors argue the EU should keep its SAF targets in place to give investors confidence, push harder to get e-SAF projects actually funded and built, and reduce reliance on imported waste oils. None of this changes rebates, equipment costs, or programs available to homeowners. It is a policy story about how Europe fuels airplanes, worth knowing if you follow climate and energy news broadly, but it does not affect decisions about insulation, heat pumps, or other upgrades to your own house.
