Port of Helsingborg scores two new electric reach stackers from Kalmar

October 7, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 6

This is port industry news with no direct action for homeowners, but it's part of the broader shift away from diesel equipment. The Port of Helsingborg in Sweden has ordered two electric reach stackers (machines that lift and stack shipping containers) from equipment maker Kalmar. The ERG450 model can lift up to 45 tons and runs with less noise, fewer emissions, and less maintenance downtime than diesel versions.

This is the first time a Swedish port has ordered an all-electric reach stacker from Kalmar, and it's part of a longer-term plan by Helsingborg, the country's second-largest container port, to phase out diesel equipment. Port officials and Kalmar representatives both pointed to unpredictable diesel fuel costs as a reason ports are moving toward electric machines, alongside the environmental benefits.

For homeowners, this doesn't change anything about your own house, rebates, or upgrades. It's a sign of how electrification is spreading into heavy industry, not just cars and home appliances, as volatile fuel prices and emissions concerns push operators toward electric equipment wherever it's practical.
