Plug-in solar meets the grid crisis

A recent heat wave pushed the eastern power grid to a record high demand, and it sparked a conversation about two ways the country is responding to grid stress. On the technology side, small "plug-in solar" panels — kits that mount on a balcony or in a backyard and plug straight into an outlet without an electrician — have taken off in Germany and Pakistan and are now spreading in the U.S. Ten states, including New Jersey and Utah, have legalized them so far. The panels typically produce up to around 1,200 watts and offset some of the power you'd otherwise buy from the utility. Savings for an individual home are modest, maybe a few hundred dollars a year, but the systems reflect a growing do-it-yourself response to rising bills, since they cost much less than a professionally installed rooftop system.

The bigger story is what happens when many of these small systems, along with home batteries and smart thermostats, get connected together. Analysts discussed estimates that this kind of small-scale, "permissionless" home generation could eventually supply 10 to 20 percent of U.S. peak electricity demand. Separately, three major residential energy companies — Sunrun, Tesla, and Renew Home — announced plans to combine home solar and battery systems into 16 gigawatts of flexible power capacity for utilities and data centers.

For homeowners, the practical takeaway is that plug-in solar is becoming a real, legal option in a growing number of states, worth checking on locally, while the technology's larger role in stabilizing the grid is still being worked out through utility rules and regulations.
