Perovskite Solar Cells Will Make Solar Power Even Cheaper
A new solar cell material called perovskite is moving closer to store shelves, and it could eventually make solar power cheaper and easier to install than today's silicon panels. Perovskite is a synthetic material that can be sprayed or printed onto surfaces like ink, instead of manufactured the way silicon cells are. Researchers around the world, including teams in Germany, the UK, Japan, and Australia, are working on ways to combine perovskite with silicon or other materials to boost efficiency and durability, which was the technology's main weakness in its early years.
One practical benefit for homeowners down the road: perovskite panels are much lighter than standard silicon panels. Traditional panels are too heavy for many rooftops to support, which is part of why solar adoption has stayed limited even though rooftops get plenty of sun. Lighter, printable perovskite panels could open up solar to buildings and roofs that can't currently handle the weight of conventional panels.
In the US, several startups are racing to bring this technology to market despite a less favorable federal policy climate for solar right now. Companies including Tandem PV, Swift Solar, Solx, and Kentucky-based Sofab Inks are developing manufacturing methods meant to cut costs and reduce reliance on expensive or hard-to-source materials. None of this is available for home installation yet — it's still in the research and early manufacturing stage — but it points toward solar panels that could eventually be cheaper, lighter, and more widely usable than what's on the market today.
