Performance Drift: The Hidden Efficiency Problem Raising HVACR Costs

Heating and cooling systems don't stay as efficient as the day they're installed. Contractors call this "performance drift" — a slow slide away from a system's original settings as parts wear, sensors go slightly off, refrigerant levels shift, and small fixes pile up over time. A quick thermostat tweak or a fan added to push air harder might solve a complaint in the moment, but it can mask a real problem, like a dirty filter, a clogged coil, or a failing seal, that keeps getting worse underneath.

The tricky part is that a system can keep running and still be working much harder than it should. Homeowners usually don't notice until the energy bill climbs or the same repair keeps coming back. Contractors interviewed said efficiency losses of 10 to 40 percent aren't unusual once dirt and neglected maintenance add up. In one example, simply cleaning a clogged indoor coil and pulling out an old, buried filter fixed an airflow problem that a previous contractor had tried to patch with extra fans. In another case, switching filter changes from twice a year to once a quarter restored lost performance.

The larger point for any home is that "still running" doesn't mean "running well." Filters, coils, and refrigerant levels drift out of alignment gradually, and catching that early — rather than waiting for a breakdown — tends to keep energy costs and repair calls lower over the life of the equipment.
