Open source semi: Windrose puts its electric truck online, for free
This news is about electric semi trucks, not home energy upgrades, but here's what happened. Windrose, a maker of electric Class 8 semi trucks, published the full engineering files for its E700 truck online for free. That's 1,023 parts from the truck's base model, available through what the company calls its 3D Viewer, along with an assembly map and parts list. The files are in the original design format, not a simplified export, so a machine shop could actually use them to reproduce a part decades from now.
The point is repair and longevity. Heavy trucks are expected to run for around fifteen years, and buyers of trucks from newer manufacturers have always faced the risk that the company might not survive that long, leaving them unable to get parts. By posting the designs publicly, Windrose says any competent shop could machine a replacement part even if the company itself disappears, the way some other electric truck and bus makers have in recent years.
None of this involves home energy equipment, rebates, or anything a homeowner would act on directly. It's a story about a shift in how one truck manufacturer is trying to reassure commercial buyers, using an open-source approach that's unusual in the auto and trucking industry. If you're weighing home upgrades like heat pumps or weatherization, this development doesn't change anything for your house.
