Ontario’s First Electricity Shortfall Isn’t A Capacity Shortfall

Ontario's electricity operator says the province needs a lot more power in the coming decades, with demand projected to reach somewhere between 207 and 297 terawatt-hours by 2050, depending on how things play out. But the more immediate issue isn't a shortage of peak power-generating capacity — it's a shortage of total electricity produced over the year. Ontario is on track to fall more than 8 terawatt-hours short annually by 2032, and more than 12 short by 2035, even after counting projects already underway.

The province is responding by buying more wind, solar, and battery storage. A recent round of contracts locked in 1,115 megawatts of wind and solar projects at prices 21% below the last comparable deal, plus 640 megawatts of new battery storage at prices 36% cheaper than an earlier procurement. These additions matter because Ontario has leaned increasingly on natural gas to keep its grid balanced — gas generation nearly tripled between 2020 and 2025 — and cheaper batteries and renewables can take over some of that balancing work without burning fuel.

Ontario is also weighing new nuclear power, including small modular reactors under construction at Darlington and possible larger projects at other sites. These involve unfamiliar reactor designs and real cost and schedule risk, so their success isn't guaranteed. For homeowners, none of this changes anything immediately, but it points to a grid that may rely more on wind, solar, and batteries in the near term, with nuclear's role decided later based on how demand actually grows.
