Omnidian celebrates its 10-year anniversary, looks to the future with a new offering
Omnidian, a Seattle company that manages maintenance and performance tracking for solar and battery systems, is marking ten years in business. Over that time it has taken on monitoring for more than 100,000 "orphaned" residential solar systems — ones whose original installer or company no longer exists — along with large commercial installations, some as big as 23 megawatts. In total, the company now oversees more than 6 gigawatts of solar and 3 gigawatt-hours of battery storage across the U.S. and Australia.
The company is using the anniversary to launch a new service for commercial battery storage, offering monitoring, warranty tracking, and performance planning for businesses, developers, and investors who own these systems. This matters mostly for context: as battery installations grow beyond homes into larger commercial projects, the industry is building more infrastructure to keep those systems running over their full lifespan.
For homeowners with rooftop solar, one detail is worth noting. Omnidian's CEO flagged reliability concerns with rapid shutdown devices (RSDs) — safety equipment required on U.S. rooftop solar systems to cut power quickly in a fire so firefighters are not exposed to live wires. He said these devices are failing at "relatively large numbers," even though the hardware is intended to protect emergency responders. If you have rooftop solar, this is a component worth being aware of, particularly if you are evaluating the age and condition of your system's equipment or planning a battery addition.
