Multisensor Data Fusion Optimizes Traffic Flow & Intersection Safety, Delivering Cost & Time Savings

August 28, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 2

This one is more about traffic engineering than home energy upgrades, but it touches on things that affect daily life around your neighborhood. Researchers at the National Laboratory of the Rockies have built a tool called IPC-Fusion that combines data from cameras, radar, lidar, and connected vehicles into a real-time digital picture of an intersection. The idea is to help traffic signals respond to what's actually happening on the road, rather than running on fixed timers.

In practice, this could mean a signal that changes for a single waiting car at an empty intersection, gives pedestrians more time to cross when needed, or adjusts during a big event or emergency. It could also flag intersections with frequent hard braking or red-light running, pointing local transportation departments to trouble spots. The Federal Highway Administration says better signal timing can cut delays by 15 to 40 percent and fuel use by up to 10 percent, so the payoff could show up as smoother commutes and fewer surprise stops near your home.

The tool has been tested at intersections in Colorado Springs and Lakewood, Colorado, and the lab is now in talks with a traffic solutions company to license it more widely. It's built to work with different sensor brands, so cities won't be locked into one vendor as they adopt it. There's no cost or program here for homeowners directly, but if your city or county eventually adopts something like this, it could mean fewer crashes and shorter waits at the intersections you drive through every day.
