More Than 1 Million Comments Opposing Roadless Rule Rollback

October 8, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 5

This one isn't about home energy upgrades, but it touches on public lands many homeowners use and care about. The Trump administration has proposed repealing the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, a 2001 regulation that has limited road building and logging on 45 million acres of national forest for more than 25 years. Scrapping it would remove those protections.

The public comment period on the repeal closed recently, and more than one million comments were submitted opposing the change, according to the Sierra Club. An early analysis found about 99 percent of commenters wanted the rule kept in place. That echoes a similar result from 2025, when over 600,000 comments on the proposal drew the same lopsided opposition, and the original 2001 rulemaking, which drew 1.6 million comments with 95 percent support.

For now, this is a policy fight playing out in Washington, not a change that affects any specific property. There's no rebate, deadline, or program here that homeowners need to act on. If you live near or use national forest land for hiking, hunting, or other recreation, this is worth watching, since the outcome could affect road building and logging access in those areas. But it has no bearing on home energy efficiency, heating and cooling upgrades, or rebate programs, which remain separate matters entirely.
