Michigan Bill Offers School Credit for Skilled Trades Work

September 23, 2026 · ACHR News · Score: 57

Michigan lawmakers are considering a bill that would let high school seniors earn academic credit for working full time in the skilled trades, including heating and cooling work. The proposal, House Bill 5648, would apply to students working at least 30 hours a week in jobs tied to recognized career and technical education paths, as defined by the state's labor department, which already includes HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) roles in its job-training system. The bill passed the Michigan House 59-39 and is now before the state Senate.

The measure includes rules on workplace safety, insurance, and documentation of a student's training, along with plans for students who can't finish a work program. It would also let local school boards decide whether a student's job counts toward the state's senior-year math requirement, though it doesn't spell out what happens if a board says no.

This is a policy story rather than one with a direct step for homeowners to take. But it points to a broader push to get more young people into HVAC careers at a time when contractors say they're short on workers. A bigger pipeline of trained technicians could, over time, mean shorter waits and more available help when you need a furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump installed or repaired. For now, the bill still needs Senate approval before it could become law.
