Mahle Introduces Range Extender For Electric Trucks

August 20, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 11

Auto parts maker Mahle has built a range extender for electric semi trucks, meant to solve the biggest complaint about battery-powered heavy trucks: not enough range and too few chargers. The system pairs a small gas engine with a generator that produces up to 130 kilowatts, and it fits into the same space normally used for batteries. That means a truck can carry a smaller, cheaper battery and still go farther. Mahle says a truck built this way gets more than 800 kilometers of range total, with the battery covering about 400 km and the range extender covering the rest, while the truck also ends up roughly 600 kg lighter.

Mahle says the range extender cuts carbon dioxide emissions by about 80 percent compared to a truck with a regular diesel engine, and running it on renewable diesel fuel gets emissions close to zero. The company plans to show the system at the IAA Transportation trade show in Hannover, Germany, this September, alongside a new electric motor for truck axles that skips rare-earth magnets entirely.

This is trucking industry news, not something that touches home energy systems or household upgrades directly. But it is part of a broader pattern: engineers keep returning to gas-electric hybrid setups, from the old BMW i3 and Chevy Volt to newer efforts from Horse Powertrain, as a bridge for vehicles that need more range than batteries alone can offer. It has no bearing on home heating, weatherization, or rebate programs, but it does say something about the pace and shape of electrification generally.
