LGES opens second Michigan battery manufacturing plant, now makes 80% of ESS in North America
LG Energy Solution has started production at a new battery plant in Lansing, Michigan, its second facility in the state (the other is in Holland, Michigan). The Lansing site will make lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, a common battery chemistry, for energy storage systems used by utilities and businesses. It will also produce a different battery type, NMC, for electric vehicles built by Toyota in Kentucky. The company has put more than $2 billion into the site since 2022 and expects it to eventually employ 1,700 people, up from about 900 now. The plant was originally a joint project between LG and General Motors for EV batteries, but GM sold its share to LG in early 2025.
This is mainly industry news about where batteries get made, not a program homeowners can sign up for. But it points to more domestic battery manufacturing, which could affect the supply and pricing of home battery systems down the road. LG Energy Solution plans to have more than 50 GWh of LFP battery-making capacity across North America by the end of 2026, spread across plants in Michigan, Ontario, Ohio, and Tennessee. By the end of this year, the company says 80% of its global energy-storage battery capacity will be based in North America.
For homeowners considering a home battery for solar or backup power, this doesn't change anything immediately, but it's a sign that more of the batteries going into those systems may increasingly be made in the U.S.
