Is the West on the cusp of a transmission breakthrough?

September 10, 2026 · Latitude Media · Score: 26

Western states are trying to speed up construction of long-distance power lines that move electricity across the region — a process that has historically taken decades. One example: a transmission line connecting Idaho and Nevada was first proposed 30 years ago and only broke ground on its final segment this month, with completion expected in 2028. Building these lines in the West is especially slow because so much land is federal, which triggers many separate permitting reviews, and because the region has no single grid operator (California is the exception).

With electricity demand rising fast from data centers, factories, and population growth, Western governors, utilities, and power developers are now working on their own coordination efforts rather than waiting on Congress. A group of utilities and power producers recently completed the first region-wide study of transmission needs, finding more than 12,600 miles of new or upgraded lines are needed over the next decade. Twelve governors have also formed a task force to align permitting rules across states so companies don't have to navigate each state's process separately. The Bonneville Power Administration, which controls most transmission in the Pacific Northwest, has also signed on to support these efforts after adding little new capacity for decades.

None of this guarantees faster construction — federal environmental reviews remain slow and prone to legal challenges, and one project, a Utah-to-Nevada line called SilverRock, will be an early test of whether the new coordination actually works. For homeowners, more regional transmission could eventually mean more reliable power and access to cheaper solar, wind, and geothermal electricity, though any benefits are years away.
