Hyundai starts taking orders for $17,700 Ioniq V, but you can’t have it
This is car news, not home energy news, but here's what happened. Hyundai has started taking pre-orders in China for a new electric vehicle called the Ioniq V, with prices starting around $17,700. It's an electric hatchback built on Hyundai's E-GMP platform, the same underlying technology used in the Ioniq 5 sold in the US, and it supports 800V fast charging, a system known for quick charging times. Depending on trim, it comes with a 53.5 or 66.8 kWh battery and a Chinese-standard range estimate of roughly 330 to 390 miles (that rating system tends to run more generous than the EPA numbers used in the US, so real-world range here would likely be lower).
The car is only available to order in China right now, as part of Hyundai's broader push of 20 planned models for the Chinese EV market. Hyundai has said it eventually wants to sell the Ioniq V elsewhere, but has given no timeline. It may show up in markets like Australia, where Hyundai already sells EVs, but current US trade policy on Chinese-linked vehicles makes it unlikely to arrive here anytime soon.
For homeowners thinking about home charging or solar setups, there's nothing to act on yet. This is a vehicle announcement out of China with no US release plans, so it doesn't change what's available to install or buy for your home right now.
