Hyundai Freaked Out About Chinese EV Producers Destroying Their Business In USA As Well?

September 21, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 21

Hyundai's CEO, Jose Munoz, is warning that the US needs to keep high tariffs and other trade barriers on Chinese electric vehicles, or the American market could end up like Europe's, where Chinese EV makers are gaining ground fast. He points to Italy, Spain, and France, where Chinese vehicles sell for 30% to 40% less than competing models, even with EU tariffs in place meant to offset unfair state subsidies.

Munoz also points to the UK as a preview of what could happen without strong barriers. The UK has no major tariffs on Chinese EVs, and Chinese brands have become the top sellers there. In the first half of 2026, Chinese-built vehicles made up 15% of UK auto sales, compared to 9% in the EU, where tariffs are higher. Munoz himself called Chinese EV technology and innovation "unbelievable," even while arguing the US should keep those cars largely locked out.

For homeowners, this story is really about the broader EV market rather than anything you need to do right now. It does not change any home energy program, rebate, or upgrade option. But if you're weighing an EV purchase or a home charging setup down the road, it's a sign that the mix of electric vehicles available in the US, and their prices, could keep shifting depending on how trade policy toward Chinese automakers plays out. Nothing here affects current incentives for home chargers or electrical upgrades.
