Hydrogen Injection Can Make Diesel Exhaust Look Cleaner. The Carbon Math Still Fails.
Some aftermarket devices for diesel trucks claim to cut fuel use and emissions by splitting water into hydrogen using the engine's own electricity, then feeding that hydrogen back into the engine. The pitch is that this makes combustion cleaner and saves fuel. The problem is the energy math: the diesel engine has to burn fuel to spin the alternator, which powers the water-splitting process, before any of that hydrogen goes back into the cylinder. Every step along the way loses energy, so the parasitic cost of making the hydrogen tends to outweigh any combustion benefit.
Independent testing backs this up. One structured test of a device called HydraGEN found fuel savings under 1% in one run and about 5% in another, with no real difference in carbon dioxide output between treated and untreated engines. A separate test on a diesel generator found fuel use actually rose as more hydrogen gas was injected, by over 5% at higher flow rates. These devices can genuinely make exhaust smoke look cleaner to the eye, since hydrogen changes how the fuel burns, but a cleaner-looking plume is not the same as lower fuel use or lower carbon emissions.
This isn't home-upgrade news exactly, since it concerns diesel trucks and generators rather than houses. But it's a useful reminder for anyone evaluating energy-saving claims generally: a visible change, like less smoke or a cleaner look, doesn't by itself prove real savings on the meter or in emissions.
