Huge new turbines could let biggest UK wind farm do more with less
ScottishPower wants to rebuild Whitelee, the UK's largest onshore wind farm near Glasgow, swapping out its older turbines for far bigger, more powerful ones. The site currently has 215 turbines generating up to 539 megawatts of electricity, plus a battery for storing power. Under the new plan, those would be replaced with 124 turbines standing 787 feet tall (more than twice the height of the site's original 2008 units) and producing around 7 megawatts each. Together, they could generate more than 1 gigawatt, roughly double the current output, using nearly half as many machines. The project still needs approval from Scottish regulators.
This is an example of "repowering," where an aging wind farm gets rebuilt with modern equipment on the same land instead of expanding into new areas. Newer turbines are more efficient, cheaper to run, and often include better sensors that protect wildlife and catch mechanical problems early. The tradeoff is that bigger equipment can strain roads and bridges during construction and requires stronger foundations.
None of this involves a specific program homeowners can sign up for. It is grid-scale power infrastructure, not a home upgrade. But it points to a broader trend: wind power keeps getting cheaper and more efficient, which affects the electricity mix feeding into the grid. Analysts expect similar repowering projects to grow in the US over the next decade, though on a smaller scale than what's planned in Scotland, with activity picking up in places like the Midwest, Texas, and California.
