GM, Ionate deploy smart grid transformer at Michigan plant
General Motors is installing new grid technology at its transmission plant in Romulus, Michigan, a project worth noting mainly as a sign of how the power grid around large factories is changing, rather than something that affects home upgrades directly. The company is working with Ionate, a UK-based firm, to deploy what's called a Hybrid Intelligent Transformer, or HIT. This device is meant to catch and fix power quality problems as they happen, monitoring conditions in fractions of a second while running at more than 99% efficiency. It will go into GM's roughly 900,000-square-foot Romulus plant, which builds 10-speed transmissions for the company's full-size trucks and SUVs, in the coming months.
GM has put $600 million into expanding transmission production capacity at this plant since November 2025, and the smart transformer is part of managing the power that expansion requires. Ionate says grids using its technology can handle 33% more distributed energy resources (things like rooftop solar or batteries feeding into the grid), carry 25% more power without needing new poles and wires, and cut wasted power by 6%, based on the company's own modeling.
The bigger context is that many grids, including in parts of the U.S., Germany, and the UK, are struggling with connection bottlenecks that delay new battery storage and energy projects. Technology like this is aimed at easing those bottlenecks at a large industrial scale. It has no direct bearing on home energy upgrades, but it reflects the kind of grid strain that can eventually shape how easily homes connect solar panels, batteries, or other equipment to local power lines.
