Geely prepares revolutionary 500 Wh/kg solid-state EV battery that could beat diesel
Geely, the parent company behind Zeekr, Volvo, Polestar, and other car brands, says it's developing a new EV battery that could hold roughly twice the energy of today's best batteries per kilogram. This "solid-state" battery (a battery design using solid materials instead of liquid electrolyte, generally safer and more energy-dense) is being tested now, with small-scale pilot production planned for 2027 across Geely's brands. The company says cars using it could get over 1,000 km of range on a charge, putting electric vehicles in range-per-tank territory similar to diesel cars, plus a claimed lifespan of up to 1 million km.
This isn't a product you can buy or plan around yet. A 2027 pilot means proving the battery can be built in small batches, not that it's ready for mass-market cars at affordable prices. Geely hasn't said when that might happen, and has not disclosed key technical details about the battery's chemistry. Other major battery and car makers, including CATL, BYD, and Toyota, are aiming for similar timelines with their own solid-state batteries, so 2027 is shaping up to be a crowded target rather than a guaranteed milestone.
For homeowners, this is background news rather than something with immediate bearing on your house. If solid-state batteries do reach the market at scale, they could eventually affect EV charging patterns and, over time, battery costs for home energy storage — but that's still years off and unconfirmed.
