Gas Stations are Changing Globally. How Has It Changed in Your Town? (Part 4: The Middle East)

September 26, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 23

Gas stations across the Middle East are turning into electric vehicle charging hubs, backed by government programs like Saudi Vision 2030 and the United Arab Emirates' National Electric Vehicles Policy. Companies including ADNOC Distribution, ENOC, SASCO, and the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Company are retrofitting old fuel stations with high-voltage chargers. The goal is to shift domestic driving to electricity so more crude oil can be sold abroad, while building out modern low-emission transportation at home.

Along major routes like the highway connecting Abu Dhabi and Dubai, operators are installing fast chargers that deliver up to 350 kilowatts, letting drivers recharge in about twenty minutes despite the region's extreme heat, which puts extra strain on batteries. Because charging takes longer than pumping gas, these stations are also growing into full stops with air-conditioned lounges, co-working areas, coffee shops, and drive-thru food, rather than just a pump and a register.

To handle the heavy power demand of fast charging, especially during peak summer cooling season, many stations are pairing chargers with rooftop solar panels and battery storage, creating small self-contained power systems that ease pressure on the local grid. The shift also covers commercial fleets, with delivery vans, taxis, and buses moving to electric power, managed through automated systems that track vehicles and balance electricity use across chargers.

None of this changes rebates or programs available to homeowners elsewhere, but it shows how quickly fueling infrastructure is shifting toward electricity, even in regions built on oil.
